To say Dave Evison has had a varied and unusual life is probably the understatement of the year. Wealth and fame were thrust upon him at two very unexpected and different times in his life, but he certainly wasn’t born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His father had a unique and original idea in the 1950s that led to a dramatic and sudden change in the family’s lifestyle, impacting everything from top to bottom. Dave has always wanted to tell his story, from his formative years up to now, mainly because only a handful of close friends are privy to what it really has been like. It is a surprising tale, which is why all his close friends have told him that he must tell all before he hangs up his microphone and headsets for good. This is not the story of an ego-tripping fantasist, but you may be forgiven for thinking that, given the vast amount of genuine name-dropping you will come across!
His unexpected journey began with preparatory and public schools, before he joined the army as a Chieftain tank driver/radio operator, which culminated in an eighteen-month posting to Northern Ireland at the height of The Troubles. After coming out of the army, Dave had numerous jobs including roof tiler, chest freezer salesman, tea salesman, record plugger, artist and repertoire man, as well as a few spells on the dole in between jobs. He then landed his dream job, working in sales and promotions at his beloved Stoke City FC. Dave had five decades of national and local radio gigs, plus so much more! He became a rebel with a cause to alienate himself from the life his father wanted him to have, in favour of the very different life that he wanted for himself. We are all gifted in one way or another and Dave’s only attribute was the proverbial ‘gift of the gab’ as you can probably tell.
He has DJ’d across Europe and the UK on the Northern Soul scene, performing in thousands of different venues, including iconic places such as Wigan Casino, the Blackpool Tower and the Winter Gardens, Glasgow’s Barrowland Ballroom, London’s 100 Club, and, surreally, the Victoria and Albert Museum. Dave loves laughing – often at his own expense! – and this autobiography will hopefully create many amusing anecdotes and memories for a great many of you readers, whether your paths have crossed with him in the last seventy-odd years or not.
It’s The Last One from Me – a line he repeated literally thousands of times before handing over the microphones and headsets to another eager disc jockey – is a self-penned warts-and-all life story. Told from the heart, from a guy who simply wanted to be one of the lads, it will leave you surprised and pleasantly shocked, and have you laughing out loud. Enjoy!
A compelling and very funny account of the extraordinary life of one of the country's best loved Northern Soul DJ's
